Proclaiming courage, valor and selfless dedication, the Greensboro Fire Department honored firefighters who died in the past and earlier years during the agency’s annual solemn Firefighters Memorial Service.
At the historic Green Hill Cemetery, families, friends and a contingent of uniformed Greensboro firefighters gathered on the hallowed grounds of the dedicated memorial established in 1924.
Moments after the department’s Honor Guard entered, the brief service began with praiseworthy remarks from fellow firefighters and Mayor Nancy Vaughan. As each of the names of six firefighters were read, family members in attendance received a triangular folded memorial flag of the Greensboro Fire Department. The six firefighters remembered included Bobby Straughan, Dewey Kivett, Emmet Vanness Jr., Irvin R. Latta, Joseph G. Daniels and Charles L. “Charlie” West. In additional to serving with the department, Daniels was a principal photographer for the Carolina Peacemaker for 50 years.
In the tradition of the department, the service concluded with resonate ringing of the memorial bell signifying the Line of Duty Deaths.
